Cape Breton Regional Police are focused on keeping CBRM roadways safe during the holiday season, in conjunction with MADD Canada Red Ribbon and Nova Scotia Operation Christmas campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of sober driving.
Driving impaired – by alcohol or drugs – is one of the leading causes of injury and death on our roads, and it is completely preventable. Police will be conducting extra checkpoints and targeted enforcement throughout the month of December, to help make sure everyone gets home safely. With more than 50 officers trained as Intoxilyzer technicians, Standard Field Sobriety Test technicians and Drug Recognition Experts, the CBRPS is well equipped to detect impaired driving and committed to enforcing road safety. Last December, police issued 11 charges for Impaired Driving offences in the CBRM, followed by a total of 101 in 2024, through to the end of November.
If you are celebrating with alcohol or cannabis, police remind you to plan ahead for a designated driver, call a taxi, or stay the night; it is never ok to drive impaired or ride with an impaired driver – in a vehicle, or on an ATV, motorcycle, snowmobile or any other form of transportation. If you suspect an impaired driver, call 9-1-1 immediately with as much information as possible, such as the vehicle description, license plate and direction of travel.
Help keep our roadways safe, and please drive sober this holiday season.
