Three teenage boys are safe after the Cape Breton Regional Police K9 Unit found them Monday night in a wooded area near Mary Joe Lane off Lingan Road.
The group called for help at approximately 12:40 AM, reporting they lost their way walking on a trail; they did not know exactly where they entered the woods, but dispatch operators were able to get GPS coordinates from the cell phone they called with, which police used to help establish a search direction from the entry point of an ATV trail on Mary Joe Lane. The K9 team tracked towards that location while officers made contact with the boys by cell phone, and also called Cape Breton Ground Search and Rescue for additional help. The Police Service Dog located them on the trail at approximately 1:25 AM; they were uninjured, but cold and wet, so Search and Rescue drove an Argo vehicle to their location and transported them out of the woods, where they were assessed by waiting EHS Paramedics and medically cleared.
The K9 team also located a lost shoe belonging to one of the boys, buried in a snow bank a few hundred feet away from where they were found. Police returned the boys safely to their homes.
