Cape Breton Regional Police are investing a fatal motor vehicle collision on Kings Road in Howie Centre Saturday night, November 9th.
Officers were called to the scene across from the Irving Oil gas station shortly after 11:00 PM, to reports of a single-vehicle rollover with passengers ejected from the vehicle. On arrival, officers noted a severely damaged Honda Civic in the field off the roadway, that had snapped a power pole in half; two passengers were located on the ground, and the driver was trapped inside the vehicle. Officers tended to all three until the arrival of EHS, who transported a 19-year-old female and 20-year-old male to Cape Breton Regional Hospital, where the female was pronounced deceased as a result of her injuries. The male remains in hospital for treatment of his injuries, believed to be non-life-threatening. Cape Breton Regional Fire Services used equipment to extract the 18-year-old male driver from the vehicle, who was taken by EHS to Cape Breton Regional Hospital and then transferred to Halifax by Life Flight for further treatment of serious injuries, where he remains in critical condition.
Kings Road was closed for several hours while police spoke with witnesses and collected evidence, and Nova Scotia Power replaced the damaged power pole. The Traffic Safety Unit, including a collision reconstructionist attended the scene and continue to investigate. Our thoughts are with the victims’ families during this difficult time.
