Cape Breton Regional Police have charged an individual connected to damaging property with graffiti in Sydney, as a result of an investigation led by the Community Safety Enforcement Unit.

In collaboration with retailers and citizens, police obtained information and video surveillance to identify a suspect who had marked downtown properties in recent weeks; on September 30th, officers arrested him on Prince Street, where they caught him spray painting a nearby building. Through further investigation, officers were able to confirm the person is responsible for graffiti markings on multiple Sydney locations – including properties on Charlotte, Ferry, Prince, Welton and Reeves Streets – between May and October.

Angus James Russell, 21 of Sydney, is charged with Mischief over $5,000. He was released, with conditions for a curfew between the hours of 7 PM and 7 AM, until his scheduled appearance in Sydney Provincial Court on November 18th.

Police continue to investigate additional graffiti markings across the CBRM and target enforcement towards this property damage. Anyone who witnesses the activity or has information the person(s) responsible is asked to please call police at 902-563-5151 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
