A 52-year-old man faces 10 charges connected to a February 28th fire at an apartment complex on Queen Street in North Sydney.
Cape Breton Regional Police were called to the scene at approximately 6:00 AM for reports of an altercation in an apartment that was also filling with smoke. On arrival, officers requested assistance from the North Sydney Fire Department and safely evacuated all occupants from the 4 apartments inside the building. The woman who called police reported that she had been a victim of assault, after which the suspect lit a fire inside the apartment and left.
Investigators were assisted by the Forensic Identification Unit and officers on scene, as well as the North Sydney Fire Department to collect witness information and evidence surrounding the incident. Officers on patrol later located the suspect on Prince Street in Sydney, where he was arrested.
Jody Francis MacDonald is remanded to the Cape Breton Correctional Centre, charged with Arson – Disregard for Human Life (x4), Arson – Damage to Property, Uttering Threats, Assault with a Weapon, Assault Causing Bodily Harm and two Breaches of previous Court-ordered Release Conditions.
