Through checkpoints and targeted traffic enforcement, Cape Breton Regional Police focused on keeping CBRM roadways safe for the holidays, stopping more than 4,000 vehicles – including 700 on New Year’s Eve – between December 15th and January 1st.

This also included a December 30th campaign with MADD Cape Breton, distributing close to 1,000 Red Ribbons to raise awareness about the important of sober driving.

Officers issued approximately 70 tickets to drivers operating vehicles without valid and required paperwork. No impaired drivers were identified at checkpoints, but officers did find and charge 5 impaired drivers throughout the CBRM during the holiday season. Police thank the public for their assistance with road safety efforts by calling suspected impaired drivers to our attention.

Holiday celebrations are over, but sober driving is always in season! It’s never ok to drive drunk or high – behind the wheel of a vehicle, or on an ATV, motorcycle, snowmobile, boat or other forms of transportation. Arrange a designated driver, call a taxi or plan to stay overnight.

If you suspect an impaired driver, call 9-1-1 with as much information as possible, such as vehicle description, license plate and direction of travel.
