Cape Breton Regional Police have charged a man with weapons offences, after they caught him hunting unlawfully in the early morning hours of February 27th.
Officers responded to reports of suspicious activity in Grand Narrows, where a resident had seen a person with a flashlight and heard a gunshot, suspecting that someone was hunting. The resident was able to provide police with a vehicle description, and officers patrolled the area locating the vehicle on Grand Narrows Highway, where they stopped the driver and found a firearm and a deer inside the vehicle.
Police seized the weapon and arrested the man; through further investigation in conjunction with Natural Resources Conservation Officer Service, officers seized additional firearms, ammunition and hunted animals from a residence.
The 52-year-old man was released on a Promise to Appear in Sydney Provincial Court on April 1st, charged with Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and Careless Use of a Firearm. Natural Resources Conservation Officer Service continues to investigate potential violations under the Wildlife Act.
