A man from Ontario faces charges in Sydney Provincial Court today after Cape Breton Regional Police arrested him as part of ongoing investigation into the sale of illegal tobacco.
On Thursday, February 27th, Street Crime officers observed a vehicle believed to be used for transporting unstamped tobacco, traveling between locations in the CBRM. With assistance from Nova Scotia RCMP Traffic Services, police stopped the vehicle on Highway 4 in the Ben Eoin area. The driver was arrested and through further investigation, including search warrants on the vehicle and several storage units, police seized approximately $30,000 cash and 87 cases of unstamped tobacco valued at approximately $90,000.
Matthew John Peters (44) was remanded to the Cape Breton Correctional Centre, charged with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, Laundering Proceeds of Crime and Possession for the Purpose of Sale of Unstamped Tobacco.
The tobacco was turned over to the Service Nova Scotia Compliance and Special Investigations Unit, for investigation of further charges under the Revenue Act.
